UNCW to Delay Classes, Operations on Feb. 20

UNCW Alert

The university is continuing to closely monitor the current weather conditions. Due to the potential for inclement weather, UNCW will delay classes and events and reduce operations on Thursday, Feb. 20.

  • All classes before 12:30 p.m. are canceled. Classes scheduled at 12:30 p.m. and later will proceed as planned, unless individual course instructors communicate alternative arrangements to their students.
  • Normal campus operations for offices and events will resume at 12 p.m. (noon) but some campus facilities may open earlier; please see the resource list below for helpful links.

If additional campus updates are needed, they will be shared by 10 a.m. on Thursday unless conditions warrant earlier notification.

Students - Classes
Students should contact their course instructor(s) as soon as possible if they feel weather conditions will not permit them to attend class beginning at 12:30 p.m., Thursday. Students should also consult their course syllabi for further details concerning class attendance and monitor their student email and Canvas site for updated messages from instructor(s).

University policy on class attendance can be found in the UNCW Academic Catalogues in the University Regulations section for the undergraduate catalogue and in the Academic Regulations and Procedures section for the graduate catalogue.

Any additional questions regarding courses should be directed to the course instructor(s) or the academic department chair/school director. A list of academic departments/schools can be found on each college website

Employees
UNCW will move to Condition 1 of the Adverse Weather Policy at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

Mandatory employees and employees temporarily assigned as mandatory due to this weather event must report to work or remain at work as directed. All other employees have the option to report late, leave early, or not report at all; however, the employee is responsible for informing his/her supervisory chain in a timely manner of all decisions. Employees may also work remotely with supervisory approval. Employees must use leave for any work time missed in accordance with leave keeping policies.

Residential Students
On-campus residential students are encouraged to stay indoors as much as possible due to expected icy and cold conditions. When heading outdoors, wear warm layers and use caution on steps, stairwells, sidewalks and roadways. Housing and Residence Life staff will prepare residence halls for inclement weather. Management at Plato’s Loft will coordinate weather preparation for HRL residents living at that property.

Other Events and Services
Remember that cold and icy weather conditions may impact scheduled events, activities and services on campus and in the Wilmington area. Before heading out, please check relevant websites and/or social media feeds for the latest updates.

UNCW Communication Updates
Please continue to monitor UNCW inboxes. Any updates will also be posted to the UNCW homepage, UNCW Alert page, UNCW Mobile and social media feeds (Facebook, Instagram and X). These sources contain the latest information available to university officials.
