UNC Wilmington has established partnerships with three international universities to create opportunities for students and faculty to elevate academic and cultural experiences.  

The university signed memorandums of understandings with GITAM in India, University of Algarve in Portugal and University of Hull in England.  

“These are strategic partnerships with similar institutions facing comparable challenges. These collaborations align nicely with the interests of many of our faculty and students, as well as our research opportunities,” said Michael Wilhelm, associate provost of global partnerships and international education. “By working together, we can pull in the same direction and overcome common challenges.” 

GITAM is a private university known for its focus on engineering, technology and management education. Established in 1980, GITAM has grown into a multidisciplinary institution with campuses in Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. 

The University of Algarve has an emphasis on marine sciences, environmental studies, tourism and sustainable development. Given its coastal location in the Algarve region, it is especially known for marine biology, oceanography and research focused on coastal ecosystems. Additionally, UAlg has a commitment to health and human services and is well-regarded for its medical school. 

The University of Hull, founded in 1927, is renowned for its research in environmental resilience, flood mitigation and maritime history. It is especially recognized for its commitment to renewable energy, demonstrated by its significant contributions to wind turbine development. 

“These partnerships will enrich academic, research and cultural experiences for students and faculty at both institutions,” said Chancellor Aswani K. Volety. “Partnerships like these inspire broader global perspectives, increase opportunities for international exchanges, and support the development of innovative programs in many fields of study.” 

The MOUs establish a collaborative partnership between the institutions and UNCW. The aim is to foster academic cooperation, student exchange programs, joint research and potential dual-degree opportunities. Areas of collaboration include exchange programs for students and faculty, joint research projects and joint curriculum development.
