Two Seahawks Recognized by the UNC Association of Student Governments

Two UNCW Seahawks have received recognition by the University of North Carolina Association of Student Governments. Christine Reed Davis, vice chancellor for student affairs, has been named this year’s recipient of the John L. Sanders Student Advocate Award. Barrett Butler, UNCW student body vice president, has been elected as senior vice president of the University of North Carolina Association of Student Governments.

The Sanders Award recognizes individuals who advocate for the best interests of North Carolina students and contribute to the quality of their lives. It is the highest honor bestowed by the University of North Carolina Association of Student Governments, the student organization tasked with representing student interests in discussions with the UNC Board of Governors.

Reed Davis has served as vice chancellor since January 2024. She previously held the position of associate vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students at UNC Charlotte. Reed Davis has more than 25 years of service in the UNC System.

“What has always inspired me most is the individual story behind each student—the challenges they overcome, the dreams they carry and the courage it takes to pursue a college degree,” said Reed Davis. “Every one of their journeys is unique, and it has been my privilege to walk alongside them, to listen, to support and to help remove barriers in their paths. To receive an award named for a servant leader like Mr. Sanders, who devoted his life to making a difference for North Carolinians, is a profound reminder of why this work matters.”

UNCW Student Body President Skyler Stein nominated Reed Davis for the award for her “unwavering commitment to student success, well-being and advocacy.”

“Dr. Reed Davis embodies student advocacy at the highest levels. When I heard the description of this award recipient, I immediately knew that she was immensely deserving,” said Stein. “She has served the state of North Carolina and our students for over 25 years, and she shows her passion and care day in and day out. Dr. Reed Davis makes this university a better place and makes a difference in each student she meets.”

Reed Davis noted that the recognition honors not only her past service but also renews her resolve to keep advocating for students. “It reminds me that when we create spaces where students feel seen, heard and valued, we empower them to thrive, and that is the true measure of our collective work,” she said.

Butler Elected as Senior Vice President

Barrett Butler, a rising senior majoring in psychology, was elected as the senior vice president of the Association of Student Governments for the 54th Session. In this role, Butler will lead the work and preside over the association’s General Body.

“Barrett has shown her incredible leadership skills during her time at UNCW and is the best person for this role. She will lead ASG and the UNC System in the right direction, keeping everyone on track and being extremely personable while she does it,” said Stein. “This is great for UNCW to continue to show its dedication to the ASG organization and continue to emerge as a leading institution in the state.”
