Celebrating UNCW Athletics’ Past and Future

Men’s basketball launched the inaugural Live Oak Bank Holiday Classic in November and invited Sam Houston State, Colgate and Appalachian State to compete in a round-robin tournament in Trask Coliseum. “Hosting a multi-team exempt event was a top priority for us going into the offseason. Not only does it give us more home games, but it gives us something that we can call ours,” said Head Coach Takayo Siddle.

"We want to continue to grow this tournament and make it an attractive destination for years to come.”

Women’s volleyball celebrated its 50th anniversary with special guests, original team members and coaches, during a banquet on Oct. 11. Head coach Dottie Hampton said, “The event meant everything! To see how far we have come with a coach like Jan Donahue, who was fighting for the right for women to play sports. It’s our history!” The original team was also recognized at the weekend’s conference home matches.

Women’s tennis traveled to Argentina this fall to play the country’s national team on its iconic courts, while also training and team building. “The red clay courts presented an exciting opportunity for us to play on a new surface,” said Stela Joksimovic, team captain. “The slower conditions demand strategic play and help us develop our endurance. Competing here challenged us to adapt our game styles!” The trip was made possible through gifts from the late William M. “Bingo” Bryan ’66, Graham Farmer, Beverly Memory and the Virginia and Alex Trask Charitable Fund.
