Joining Forces: UNCW, Area Police Partner to Host Annual Torch Run
Since the 1980s, law enforcement officers across the nation have mobilized to support the Special Olympics. UNCW, in partnership with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, is hosting the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics North Carolina (NC LETR) for the first time in seven years.
The Flame of Hope will travel across the state from six different points throughout May, stopping at UNCW the morning of May 19.
Corporal Alexus Ellis, community engagement officer with the UNCW Police Department, is coordinating the effort and said the event speaks directly to the department’s values of teamwork, equality, accountability and leadership.
“It has been great to connect and partner with a local agency to show us as one unit, working together to make a difference and supporting the Special Olympics athletes. This event gives the community an opportunity to run in unity with us and to engage with the athletes who are directly impacted by the fundraising,” she said.
The NC LETR includes more than 2,500 law enforcement officials from more than 200 agencies covering 2,000 miles.
Corporal Ellis attended the annual event conference and obtained sponsorships from local businesses and campus partners. UPD is also hosting a dunk tank and participating in Bowling with Badges, with all proceeds directly benefiting the Special Olympics North Carolina.
