Each year Modo Labs bestows Appademy Awards to university apps for exemplary use of its technology. UNCW was honored in the category of “Best Traditional Event” for enhancing its annual fall move-in experience with UNCW Mobile, an app launched in June 2024.
"The concept of a campus app was championed from day one by Chancellor Aswani Volety, who wanted to ensure our student move-in experience was as efficient and seamless as possible,” said Jarrett Piner, senior director of enterprise project management and client experience. “The ITS implementation team worked with various campus stakeholders to understand our campus’ move-in processes to best incorporate use of the app."
In addition to Piner, the implementation team included ITS staff members Danielle Ferrell, Jonathan Graves, Philip Kukla and Whitney Yenner.
With less than three months to prepare, the team focused the UNCW Mobile App rollout entirely around the student experience by integrating with Housing and Residence Life’s “StarRez” database. On Move-In Day, students could reference information from the palm of their hand when traveling to campus and upon arrival, streamlining their experience. The app also provided helpful last-minute reminders and up-to-date information.
Additionally, the team developed a new campus map via Google API integration, which students and parents used to find their way to and around campus.
“Through strong leadership by our CIO, Dr. Sharyne Miller, ITS is continually evaluating project priorities as they align with campus goals,” said Piner. “As such, our organization is able to direct resources to the long-term work while also addressing more immediate priorities as they are identified.”
ITS plans to incorporate app usage for additional university events, including commencement.
