UNCW Among Best Schools in Nation for Veterans
UNC Wilmington is the best school for veterans in North Carolina, according to the latest Military Times rankings. UNCW is ranked #1 in North Carolina and #8 in the southeast on the “Best for Vets 2024 Colleges” list. The list is the largest and most comprehensive review of schools for military service members and veterans, ranking 325 private and public institutions. Overall, UNCW ranks in the top 30 schools nationwide, marking the seventh year in a row that UNCW has been on the list.
"Receiving a national ranking among the top 30 universities for veterans is a powerful affirmation of UNCW’s commitment to supporting those who have served,” said Bill Kawczynski, director of military affairs. “It means we are recognized not only for the quality of our academic programs but also for our dedication to creating a supportive and resource-rich environment tailored to veterans' unique needs. This ranking is a testament to our continuous efforts to ensure that veterans thrive academically, professionally and personally."
Support of veterans is one of UNCW’s founding values as it was established as a G.I. Bill school in 1947. When the school opened 77 years ago as Wilmington College, it welcomed 238 students—75% were veterans. As Wilmington College evolved into UNC Wilmington, that support remained. Four of the institution’s 10 presidents and chancellors served in the U.S. military; 15 campus landmarks are named after veterans.
In September 2020, UNCW opened the 145,000-square-foot Veterans Hall. It is home to the Office of Military Affairs, a support and advocacy office established in March 2016 to develop and coordinate resources for military-affiliated students with academic and career goals.
In 2023, UNCW was designated as an official Purple Heart Designated University. The designation affirms the university’s commitment to those who have been wounded or killed while serving to protect freedom. In August 2024, U.S. Army veteran and alum David Buzzard ’18 presented his Purple Heart to UNCW, highlighting his connection to his alma mater and amplifying conversations surrounding veteran suicide.
Each year, UNCW hosts several events including a Veterans Day ceremony and luncheon during Veterans Week.
